“Really??? OK… But, WHY WOULD I DO THAT?“
It’s PENTECOST!!
“Don’t we celebrate that in JUNE?”
Sometimes… It is celebrated 50 days from EASTER — so because Easter was early, it is earlier this year.
“WHAT IS PENTECOST, ANYWAY???!”
Pentecost (meaning 50th day) was the powerful arrival of the HOLY SPIRIT in and around the disciples and their friends gathered in Jerusalem.
According to the descriptions in the book of Acts, a sudden and violent WIND came out of heaven and they saw what seemed to be TONGUES OF FIRE that came to rest on each of them… All of them were then filled with the HOLY SPIRIT which enabled them to speak in other languages, not their own… When Jews from other nations heard their own languages being spoken, they were amazed, because they could understand what they were saying! They couldn’t figure it out… Some thought they must all be drunk!
Peter got up and said… “No! They aren’t drunk… it’s only 9:00 AM! Let me tell you about Jesus and what the Holy Spirit is all about …“
And he did.
More than 3000 were baptized that day… a major turning point — marking the “birthday” of the church.
PENTECOST IS A BIG DEAL!!
“But what difference does it make to us NOW — in 2024???”
The Holy Spirit appeared in a new and extremely powerful way then — and continues to be in each of us NOW! EACH MOMENT! — advocating, teaching, empowering us to live out God’s story in our lives…
The Holy Spirit breaks down walls between us — with LOVE that goes beyond the differences in how we look or live or think.
It is the Holy Sprit who offers us the gifts of forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, love, peace, joy…
IT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO OFFERS US THE LIFE THAT DEATH CANNOT DESTROY!
In our tragically divided and broken-down world, we need to be creating a Pentecost event wherever we go! — by feeling the wind/breath of God in every breath we take, constantly tuning into the Holy Spirit within ourselves — and encouraging others to do likewise.
So — wear ♦️ RED ♦️ this Sunday!
